The Burren
The Burren takes its name from the Irish word ‘bhoireann’ meaning, ‘a stony place’ or ‘a rocky place’, which is a good description for this 350 sq kilometres limestone plateau in North Clare. The rough, intriguing and attractive landscape was formed 320 million years ago under a tropical sea. Later it was shaped by ice, hard weather and, of course, man and his beasts.
A visit to the Burren Centre is an absolute must.Kilfenora is also known as the ‘City of the Seven Crosses’, although there are only five of them left around the Cathedral and Kilfenora village. The Cathedral was built in 1189 on the site of an early monastery. As a diocese, Kilfenora maintained its independence until 1750. But since 1883, through some strange administrative twist in the catholic hierarchy, it appears that no lesser than the Pope himself is effectively the Bishop of Kilfenora.Besides the historic, there is the musical side to Kilfenora. The ‘Kilfenora Céilí Band‘ has achieved world fame and has existed in some form or another since 1870. If you like Irish traditional music and dancing, you’ve come to the right place. The Pubs in Kilfenora have Irish music and set dancing on a regular basis. Despite of tourism being one of the main industries in the area for many years, the music in Kilfenora is as pure as you will hear anywhere in Ireland.
