History of Ballyroe Heights Hotel
Ballyroe Heights Hotel has a long history dating back to the 1800’s. The first building on the land was Ballyroe Lodge, a long low one storey building built in 1840 by Pierce Chute Esq. There was a small stable and good gardens with a few trees and three ringforts on the townland. The house was renovated and enlarged for the marriage of his son Pierce to Arabella of Roxborough House. Pierce Chute was still in residence in 1886.
In the twentieth century, the dwelling was owned by Senator Goodwin, followed by the O’ Brien, Brosnan and Purtill families. In around 1975, Mr. Fitzmaurice opened a hotel at Ballyroe naming it Ballyroe Country Club and in 1990 it was transferred to the Knapp family who remained in residence until 1999. The Collins family of Ballyroe then purchased the hotel and it has been extensively renovated with the original lodge still remaining.
